Southwark Cathedral is situated in the middle of London on the south shore of the Thames near the Tower Bridge. For approximately one thousand years, churches have stood at this location on the remains of a Roman villa. The main portion of today's cathedral was constructed between 1220 and 1420. However, the nave was newly constructed beginning 1890 and a cathedral emerged from a simple church. It is currently the headquarters of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark.
