The main church of Edinburgh is St. Giles Cathedral which has been the centre of spiritual life in that city for over 900 years. Its four central columns are the oldest part of the church, dating back to the year 1120. Charles I established the first Scottish bishop 100 years after the Church of Scotland broke with Rome during the Reformation, and St. Giles became a cathedral.
