In 1973, the airport Zurich-Kloten was equipped with automatic open space heating in order to keep the 8 aircraft parking areas, together with 16,000 m² of space, free of snow and ice, even in the severest winter. A total of 62,500 metres of MB System Pipe were installed. An hourly thawing of 30 mm could be ensured by means of a supply temperature of up to 70° C.
Each parking area was equipped with an own weather-dependent automatic control device with monitoring facilities of all heating system functions available in the tower. In order to stand firm loads of up to 30 kN/m², the system was embedded into a 300-mm thick reinforced concrete ceiling on an additional layer of 200 mm concrete.
